Bill Mason
As a tribute to the late Bill Mason, a Canadian recognized at home and abroad as a canoeist, environmentalist, filmmaker, photographer, artist and public speaker, Paddle Canada established the Bill Mason Memorial Scholarship Fund with the permission and input of the Mason family.

To ensure that the memory and spirit that Bill represented is kept fresh in the minds of Canadians, the scholarship fund is intended to incorporate some of the characteristics that made Bill Mason unique. This will be done by awarding an annual scholarship of $1,000 to a Canadian undergraduate student enrolled in outdoor recreational or environmental studies at a Canadian college or university.

Paddle Canada is pleased to be able to assist with the education of tomorrow's environmental stewards and to ensure the memory and spirit of Bill Mason is kept vibrant. Donations to the Bill Mason Memorial Scholarship Fund (tax deductible receipt provided) are continually being accepted and are placed into an annuity account. As interest obtained from donations continues to grow, additional scholarships may be provided.

Scholarship applications are accepted by the Paddle Canada until September 30th. The recipient will be posted on-line and applicants notified no later than November 10th.

The scholarship is awarded two instalments. The first instalment of $500 will be awarded by November 10th. By May 15th the recipient must provide a report to the Scholarship Committee outlining the degree of environmental insight gained during the academic year (600 word maximum). An academic transcript for the previous semester must also be provided. The final $500 instalment will be awarded following the satisfactory receipt of the recipient's mid-session progress report and academic transcript.

The recipient will also receive a one-year membership to Paddle Canada, which will entitle him or her to receive a subscription to KANAWA, Canada's Paddling Magazine as well as a beautiful Canadian Heritage Rivers Calendar.

Dependant upon the quality of the applications received there may, or may not, be a scholarship awarded in any given academic year.
